Day
Current work
My latest work is Day, an open-source Rust framework for native apps on phones and desktops. Explore the documentation.
Skip
Since 2023
I helped start Skip with Abe White in 2023, a toolchain for building iPhone and Android apps with Swift.
The App Fair Project
Since 2022
I started the App Fair Project in 2022. It is a non-profit charity based in the United States and France, helping people build and distribute free, open-source mobile apps. The app catalog and project blog show the work in progress.
Glimpse I/O
Earlier work
I founded Glimpse I/O to build database and data-visualization apps for Mac, iPhone, and iPad. The Glimpse I/O GitHub organization collects the app framework and related Swift libraries; my SwiftFest 2019 biography describes that work.
Stanza
iPhone launch, 2008
Stanza was the first ebook reader on the iPhone App Store, launching on the opening day of the Apple App Store in 2008. Amazon acquired Lexcycle in April 2009, and by its first anniversary the app had more than two million downloads (which at the time was an impressive number). I went on to work on Kindle apps. As part of my work on Stanza, I co-authored the Open Publication Distribution System (OPDS) specification with Hadrien Gardeur.
JLine
Started in 2002
I wrote JLine’s original version to bring line editing, history, and completion to Java command-line applications. Now maintained by its community, JLine still handles console line editing in Java’s JShell, Scala’s REPL, Groovy’s shell, and sbt. Spring Shell also offers a JLine integration.
Kodo / OpenJPA
Kodo began in 2001
I worked on Kodo with the founding team at SolarMetric. BEA acquired SolarMetric in 2005, and the core persistence code was donated to Apache as OpenJPA. The Apache FAQ records the project’s history.
